Born of Illusion

Born of Illusion - Teri Brown 1.5 stars

Born of Illusion has a very alluring premise but unfortunately the book failed for me. The biggest issue I had with the book was the way in which it was written. The author chose a 1st person style and quite frankly I think this was a potential downfall. Perhaps had we not been trapped inside Anna's head the book would have been written differently? I cannot say. But listening to Anna talk was grueling, dull and essentially monotone to me. The following are sentences from a page chosen at random:

"I do not trust him yet." "I try to look confused." "I finally shake my head." "He stands as well."

Yes, these are sentences authors could easily include in their novels but they are ALL over the place. I found these stilted sentences distracting and it created an image of a main character who is monotonous and downright dull.

It took forever for anything to happen plot-wise and by the time it did I could not bring myself to care, it was too late. In addition, the element of the 1920s was not used to its fullest in my opinion, it was much weaker than other recent YA's set in this time period.

Also the author included a love triangle of sorts. There was absolutely no need for a love triangle and it was a terribly weak one to boot. Anna was clearly all over the place, it was hard to determine whom she actually liked since she was blushing and ridiculous with each one.

Overall Born of Illusion was tedious and lacked the vibrancy I look for, especially in books from the great decade of the 1920s!
