Masque of the Red Death

Masque of the Red Death - Bethany Griffin Masque of the Red Death is based on Poe's story which I believe has the exact same title. I never enjoyed Poe's writing and have not read a single thing of his since I was forced to do so in high school. Therefore I cannot say whether Griffin's version is told in a similar manner to Poe, but if it is I see why I disliked Poe.

There was only one thing I liked about this book: the cover. The writing style is awful. There is no life to the way it is written, no one and nothing comes alive. I suppose this could have been done purposely since there is a plague but it does nothing to draw you in. The writing is dull, stilted and entirely off-putting. Few books have been written in such a way that I absolutely could not even come to care about anything in the story, but this was one of them.

The characters are also cliche and agonizingly annoying. You want them all to catch the plague and die to be done with it all already. Decisions and reasons for things make little sense. The story is all over the place and leaves you wondering what truly is the point to it all.

Masque of the Red Death is one of the worst books I have read thus far in 2012. Don't be fooled by the cover.
