I greatly enjoyed this installment of the Kate Daniels series, the best so far in the series. The first two books were good but overly complicated with setting up the world and introducing many characters. However, in Magic Strikes we are able to relax into the well-established world and world rules and simply flow with the excellent plot. There is much well-placed humor (many laugh-out-loud moments), suspense, drama, sexual tension, action and everything else you could ever want without being overwhelming or distracting. My only complaint is about the action scenes, which I am never a fan of whether in print or visual media. They can be a tad difficult to follow at times, but again I do find them the least interesting of all the aspects of these books so maybe it is just me.

We learned more about the characters in this one, including Kate's history (great!) and even more background for Jim, Derek and Curran. I love the tension between Curran and Kate (the ending is great and I can't wait to see how that unfolds in Magic Bleeds) and the relationship being established between Andrea and Raphael. The characters really came to life in this one and I found myself becoming attached (always a good thing). I cannot wait to read Magic Bleeds, what greater praise can you give an author?
