Throne of Glass

The Assassin and the Princess - Sarah J. Maas I really came to like and root for Celaena while reading the prequel novellas to Throne of Glass. Through these novellas, I came to see Celaena as a whole and believable character, one that had faced trials and tribulations for years. My heart broke for her as she lost Sam and it broke once more as she faced this hurt again in Throne of Glass. But my point is, some of the issues other reviewers may have had with Celaena in this book--not convincingly tough, too concerned with men or appearances--did not bother me because I had already come to see Celaena as wholly believable character. Celaena's toughness is not extinguished by her love of dresses and men, it simple shows her as a person unto herself.

I did, however, feel as though the story could have moved a bit faster in parts and I would have liked to have seen more battling (although the final battles were rather interesting, especially with the fae help). However, I did love the interactions between Celaena, Dorian and Chaol. Celaena and Chaol's interactions particularly appeal to me due to them feeling authentic and containing a bit of sweet awkwardness.

I do look forward to reading the sequel and the subsequent books/novellas in the series.
