This Song Will Save Your Life is a very well-written, heart tugging novel that made me fall in love with Elise, the main character. In many ways Elise reminded me of myself in school, although I never contemplated suicide or longed for attention the way she did. But so many of the observations and statements about life in high school is pretty profound. Overall I think this book could make a positive impact on a teenager or really any person who feels like they are not what society expects them to be.
Some notable quotes:
“Don't be special." That's what I would say to my younger self if I could pinpoint the moment when I went astray. But there was no one moment. I was always astray."
"I don't believe that anyone who is a legitimately interesting person can be popular as a teenager. Or ever, maybe. Popularity rewards the uninteresting." (Stated by Mel. SO true.)
"I suck at pretending to be anything I'm not. It's not for lack of trying." I really understood this, from a deep to even shallow level (for example, keeping my mouth shut in certain situations is quite....difficult).
I would definitely recommend this, especially to those burdened with not fitting into society's neat little box of preferences.
