Gone Girl

Gone Girl - Gillian Flynn 3.5 stars

Oh Gillian Flynn, you know how to write a psychological thriller don't you? This book was a total mind f*ck. Flynn excels in making her characters believable, which just makes them that much more disturbing. Her psychological profiling of the characters is solid and she truly understands the evil residing in many humans and then she manages to write it all into a story better than most. Flynn's books, every single one of them, cause you to keep thinking of the book long after you've finished because you are always left with a "holy sh*t" feeling afterwards.

As for this particular book, in Gone Girl the main characters are Nick and Amy. These two are truly terrible, twisted and psychotic (at least in the case of one of them) people, who are also married. I couldn't bring myself to cheer for either one but I couldn't tear myself away from the story either. I never knew what twist or mind f*ck of a move Flynn was going to throw in next.

The first half of the book reminded me of the infamous Scott Peterson case from years ago. Since the Peterson case was not in itself all that rare (unfortunately), the elements that could have felt cliche were not. I mean in this environment of 24/7 news coverage and crime television shows of all sorts, is any crime truly wholly original? But Flynn still threw a few wrenches into the missing wife crime drama scenario. She really takes you for a ride, a psychotic one, but a good one nonetheless.

Gone Girl was another enjoyable crime thriller from Flynn and I look forward to more from the author.
