Something Strange and Deadly (Something Strange and Deadly - Trilogy)

Something Strange and Deadly - Susan Dennard Something Strange and Deadly starts off well, with a historical Philadelphia setting and a feisty main character. There is a missing brother, walking dead and spirits. There is also a subplot of Eleanor's mother attempting to hook her up with a pompous rich man, a storyline which proved tedious to me. However, the worldbuilding is lacking as we know little to nothing about the "zombies" and the environment of this setting overall. Yes, we know that women are treated as they were at the actual time, but what about everything else? Nothing felt explained in great detail, including some of the questions Eleanor herself asks of the Spirit Hunters. The explanations for how they find and deal with spirits/zombies was not fulfilling at all.

I enjoyed the style in which the author wrote, just not every way she used it. Eleanor was a great character due to her feistiness. But the plot was rather predictable to me and I wish it had that special "it" factor that sucks you into a book, but it did not. Something Strange and Deadly will appeal to many, but for me it was just middle of the road and lacking. I would like to say I'll definitely read the sequel but I don't think I'll be missing much if I pass that up.
