This book was simply a geek overload. I really do not understand why it is so popular or was even published since it was essentially the author indulging in his fantasies of the 80s. I hate when the presence of the author is so freakin' clear and it very much is in Ready Player One. The whole situation is like being stuck in Ernest Cline's mind (I imagine) and I did not want to spend one more second than necessary in it.
Along with obviously being a geek's fantasy, the novel was also poorly written. The info dumping was atrocious, both for the time period it was portraying and for the 80s pop culture. The 80s pop culture references were most often useless mentions just for the freakin' sake of mentioning. Cline didn't bring forth 80s nostalgia, he tried to murder one of the quirkiest decades and one that I have always loved.
The main character of the novel was frustratingly annoying. The character and the book is obsessed with gaming and I just cannot understand the mindset. I like the occasional video game but I'm not gaga for them--I could live completely without them and not suffer thank you. I imagine you would have to be pretty big into video games to not find all of the mentions tedious and beyond dull. The humor was also something you have to suffer through, including "mom" jokes. Ugh.
I don't understand why this novel is so popular but I truly do not want to be a person who would find this entertaining. It simply is not the mindset for me. I think I will go listen to some 80s music or watch an 80s movie to purge this crap of a novel from my thoughts.
