Shadows

Shadows - Paula Weston Angel books tend to go one way or another for me, I either really like them or hate them. Shadows immediately fell into the latter category. There was nothing redeeming about this novel and I subsequently had to abandon it. The writing is stilted and poor, which was immediately apparent but I trudged ahead. Unfortunately the protagonist is unlikable and quite frankly idiotic. On top of that, the plot is predictable and I couldn't help but roll my eyes whenever the new plot "element" came into play. In addition to all these issues, there was also a LOT of telling and no showing.

The crapfest started early in this one, with the first paragraph of the entire book being stilted and dull (at least that is how it read in my head, just me maybe?):

I'm running along the boardwalk, wind and sand stinging my arms. It's after work and I have the track to myself. A handful of surfers are battling the choppy waves [...]

And the beginning of Chapter 2:

Maggie and I are in the red laminate kitchen of our bungalow. [...] Maggie has pushed her knitting aside while she reads. Outside, the surf is constant, muffled; the beach is down the hill, a block away.

*Yawn*

How the fuck am I supposed to want to dive into THAT snoozefest?

But regardless, the characters, the plot and the writing were to frustrating and annoying for me to ever enjoy.
